HELLBOY MOVIE POSTER by DREW STRUZAN

The following demonstration is taken from the DVD "Conceiving and Creating the Hellboy Movie Poster" by Drew Struzan. It provides an insight into the artist's thought process as well as his technique. It also provides a step-by-step process in the dealing with the movie studio in the creation of a movie poster.

The process starts with the preparation of a rough showing the artist's thought on the potential design. These roughs are called "comps". Drew submitted eight black and white comps.

After reviewing the comps the movie studio came back with their selection and comments for changes. Drew then prepared the color comps baed on the feedback from the studios. He submitted these color comps:

The studio combined the elements of the first two designs to come up with the final design. Commercially the third color comp is a weak solution. When was the last time you saw a movie poster featuring only the central character without the rest of the cast?. Drew prepared the final comp:

However after reviewing the final comp the studio wanted to make a change to the background, including a gothic arch. Here is the final approved design. The level of finish of the final comp is so high that the studio virtually sees the finised artwork before it is painted. Drew used the same techniques and processes for the comps as for the final painting.

For the final art Drew prepared his illustration board with several coats of gesso. He then projected the final comp onto the board to establish the overall composition and scale. He drew the details in black pencil. His superb draftmanship establishes the essence of his style.

The areas that are black were painted with acrylic black paint. This is how the artwork looked at the end of this step.

Drew masked the background area behind the figures and splattered the entire painting with black paint using a large typewriter cleaning brush. He then applied colors using an airbrush with acrylic paints.

Once the coloring was completed Drew brought out the hightlights and strengthened the contrast by going over the entire painting with color pencils.
