RICHARD SCHMID - PORTRAIT PAINTING

This portrait was painted as a demonstration at Village Arts of Putney in Vermont. The model was his wife, Nancy Guzik who is also a noted painter.

STEP 1: Working on a toned canvas, Schmid squinted to simplify Nancy's face down to the light and shadow planes, which he then painted in large, flat tones keeping the shadows warm. He also placed his darkest dark.

STEP 2: After designating the lightest light and the darkest dark, Schmid applied patches of accurate color with the correct value to the areas on the canvas.

STEP 4: Schmid added more detail in the facial features. He placed a speck of white at the bottom of Nancy's right eye to demonstrate how easy it is to alter the expression of the sitter with one brushstroke.
